With winter fast approaching, here are some tips to help you make the most of your wood heater during the colder months.
- Wood heaters and flues must be installed by a licensed mechanical services plumber
- Regular servicing will improve efficiency and can reduce the risk of a house fire by removing creosote, a highly combustible tar-like material that can accumulate and block the flue
- Follow the manufacturers instructions for lighting, fueling and operating the wood heater
- Use paper or kindling wood to get the fire started
- Only use dry, seasoned wood
- Arrange the wood so plenty or air can flow around all sides
- Always leave the air control open for at least 20 minutes after starting or refueling the fire
- Do not overfill the heater or try to burn logs that are too large
- Keep combustible materials, such as overhanging tree branches, well clear of flues
